Another Bank Holiday … a few things to consider

The “Early May Bank Holiday” is already upon us … on Monday the 7th of May to be precise.

If you’re lucky enough to be staying at South Meadows, here are a few of the events happening around and about.

Music

Paxton House is an 18th Century Palladian mansion close to Berwick upon Tweed.  Apart from being worth a visit in its own right, the house regularly hosts musical events.

On Sunday the 6th May at 2:30pm there will be a free concert of chamber music featuring Scelerisque Duo.  The duo in question are Hungarian born Balázs Renczás (cello) and Viktória Sarkadi (piano) who met while studying at the Béla Bartók Conservatoire of Music and the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.

The one hour event is presented in association with Live Music Now Scotland and Paxton House.  The programme will include BRAHMS ~ Sonata no 1 in E minor, ORBÁN ~ In Cinema, PIAZZOLLA ~ Libertango and BARTÓK ~ Romanian Folk Dances.

Family Fun

On Monday the 7th May, from 11:00 to 15:00, the Heatherslaw Light Railway is running a Bank Holiday Bubble Train.  This is a wonderful, working narrow gauge railway running between Heatherslaw and Etal … near Ford Castle.

Further information is available here https://www.heatherslawlightrailway.co.uk/

On Bank Holiday Monday all children will be provided with a bubble mix to blow … the idea being to cover the train in bubbles!

In the same vicinity and on the same day, St Abbs Market Traders are holding a pop-up market in Etal Village Hall offering a range of locally produced foods and crafts along with a selection of clothing, accessories and gifts.

Toys and things

Throughout the weekend, Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery in Alnwick are hosting two events for children and parents alike:

  • “Batteries Not Included” … features a whole range of toys and games through the ages, with lots of hands-on opportunities for children of all ages. Do not miss this unique experience.
  • “Build It weekend” … Build a model using one of our construction sets including Knex, Lego, Duplo, Meccano and others, have a photo taken and enter the competition for the best model.

Comedy

A little later than the bank holiday week, on Saturday the 12th May the Maltings Theatre in Berwick-Upon-Tweed plays host to Manford’s Comedy Club.

This live comedy show features four brilliant comedians from around the UK, personally selected by Jason Manford.

A great evening of original stand-up comedy with some top names from the touring circuit and television.

Comedy at the Maltings

If you haven’t been before, expect a great evening of original stand-up comedy from some very funny people, who thrive in the live arena and just want to make you laugh out loud!  Manford’s Comedy Club was launched by comedian Jason Manford and his brother Colin just over two years ago.  The idea was to bring comedians from the UK circuit to small towns and cities across the country for a night of live comedy.
